Moota the cat returns3/13/2024 The ending, especially, where Haru suddenly becomes calm and sophisticated seems forced, as if a few hours in a magical land is enough to fundamentally change one’s personality. This transformation isn’t even subtle, with new cat features appearing conveniently at any lull in the screenplay). (I feel like the best messages are those which don’t have to be told, but this film reminds us constantly that Haru is losing sight of herself, most obviously through her cat transformation. And the main message of the story – about the importance of staying true to one self’s – is very corny, and not integrated into the story especially well. The plot is ridiculously silly: a mythical cat kingdom where humans turn into cats. This is certainly not one of Studio Ghibli’s finest stories. Nevertheless, it does work well for a film that is largely a comedy. The animation (as above) reflects this as well: cartoonish, with undefined backgrounds. The plot, focusing on a girl’s escape from a mythical world ruled by a scheming cat king, is not Studio Ghibli’s sophisticated or admirable.
